Female Empowerment for Students’ Leadership Roles in Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania

Abstract

This study explores opportunities for empowering female students to successfully take
on leadership roles in higher learning institutions (HLIs). The available literature on this
topic tends to focus more on the challenges and barriers faced by female student leaders
in general, and less on leadership empowerment. Generally, research shows that factors
like poverty, gender stereotypes and institutional cultures impact female student’s
willingness and ability to take up leadership roles in HLIs. Findings reveal that both
socio-cultural and institutional challenges need to be addressed for female students to
be willing and able to take up challenging leadership roles at HLIs, and later on in
workplaces. The study recommends that female students be empowered through the
right institutional policy mix, leadership education programs and dialogues that should
address the complex factors that affect girls’ involvement in leadership roles in HLIs.
