Sex-Based Analysis of Students’ Views on Integrating Sexuality Education in Higher Leaning Institutions in Tanzania: The Case of Dar es Salaam University College of Education

Abstract

The ways students engage in learning sexuality education highly depend on their
attitudes towards it. This study explored students’ views on integrating sexuality
education in higher learning institutions. It used sex as a unit of analysis to analyse
differences in attitudes between male and female students. A mixed method design
facilitated the study. While cross-sectional survey informed quantitative data,
phenomenological research study informed qualitative information. A sample of 240
students was drawn using simple random and convenient sampling. The data was
analysed using mean, standard deviation, independent t-test statistics and thematic
analysis. The findings revealed that there were positive attitudes on the integration of
sex education in higher learning institutions among students, with male students being
more supportive than female ones. However, the noted difference was not significant.
Of all requested topics, homosexuality received the poorest rating. A majority of
students did not support the inclusion of this content in their curricular. The study calls
for curriculum reviewers to device means of introducing sexuality education in higher
learning institution so as to protect students from sexual harm.
